Policy Internship Opportunities

Currently hiring fall 2008 Interns!!!

The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) is seeking public policy interns to work in our Washington, DC office from August 18–December 19, 2008.

About Us:

NCADV is a national grassroots advocacy organization representing domestic violence victims, advocacy programs, and state coalitions. The NCADV Public Policy Office lobbies Congress, monitors legislative and legal developments, analyzes federal and state legislation and common law, and provides information about pending policy initiatives to shelters, state coalitions, and other grassroots advocates. NCADV also develops public education materials, conducts media outreach, and is an active coalition partner with other organizations committed to ending domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking and all forms of violence against women, as well as promoting women's rights.

Internship:

Interns will have a unique opportunity to learn first-hand about the national policy-making process while advancing an important cause. A small stipend is available for non-credit earning students.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Monitoring and analyzing federal and state anti-violence legislation, appropriations and common law
  • Researching and preparing information for member groups, policy-makers, the media and the public
  • Attending Congressional hearings, press conferences and meetings
  • Responding to technical assistance and information requests from policy-makers

Experiences:

  • Meeting members of the Legislative and Executive branches
  • Shadowing national advocates and congressional staffers
  • Observing the legal process designed specifically for domestic violence victims
  • Interacting with and assisting domestic violence victims and their children

Qualifications:

  • A strong commitment to ending domestic and sexual violence
  • Superior written and oral communications skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs and internet research tools
  • Understanding of and commitment to diversity issues
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative in a fast-paced office and meet deadlines
  • Availability of at least 15 hours per week
  • Capitol Hill experience and bilingual skills a plus!
