FVPSA Funding Victory in the House!

The Appropriations Committee's Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services and Education (LHHS) in the House of Representatives voted yesterday to increase funding for the Family Violence Prevention and Services Act by $10 million (from $124.7 to $134.7 million).

The proposed increase to $134.7 million is exciting because a percentage of that money would be dedicated for direct services to children exposed to violence.

The LHHS appropriations bill will go to the full House Appropriations Committee and then to the floor for debates and votes. The Senate will go through the same process, then the two bills have to be rectified and signed by the President.

Stay tuned for more information.

Four promising bills related to enhanced services for victims of domestic violence and their children have been introduced this spring in the 110th Congress.  They focus on services for victims in the areas of economic security and sufficiency, legal representation, and violence against children. Be sure to check out the exciting provisions in each bill.
Economic Security
WritingThe Survivors' Empowerment and Economic Security Act (S.1136) introduced by Senator Murray (D-WA) and the Security and Financial Empowerment Act (H.R. 2395) introduced by Representative Roybal-Allard (CA-34) contain important provisions that would promote the economic security and safety of victims. They would create a federal standard which would replace the current uneven (and often insufficient) protections currently in place in state laws.
Legal Services
Writing The National Domestic Violence Volunteer Attorney Act (S.1515) was introduced by Senator Biden (D-DE). This bill would establish a domestic violence volunteer attorney network to represent domestic violence victims in needs of legal services. This bill would help to fill the critical need for many victims who are without affordable and appropriate representation as they navigate the court system.
Violence Against Children
Writing The Violence Against Children Act (S.1296) was introduced by Senator Boxer (D-CA). This Act would provide a more comprehensive approach to ending violent crimes against children, including tougher Federal penalties, assistance for child victims, and support for law enforcement.
We encourage you to read more about these pending initiatives, and to contact your Members of Congress to co-sponsor these exciting bills!

Sincerely,
