At this meeting, several scholarly papers in the field of men’s studies will be presented. Please click here to see the list. Our meetings are open to everyone and are of interest to non-academics: instead of just jargon and statistics, we provide food for thought, support for feminist positions, lively discussion, and time well spent.

NCADV’s Opening Plenary Session: "Inspire, Organize, Manage, Motivate - Defining Leadership in a Movement for Change"

How do we define leadership in a movement created to challenge imbalances of power? Does the nature of our work present unique challenges to those of us courageous enough to step into leaderhship? How do young people entering the movement experience and carry out leadership? Are we preparing a next generation of leaders committed not only to strong domestic violence services but radical social change? This plenary will attempt to answer these questions and set the stage for the 2010 conference - the changing faces – and challenges – of the Movement.

6:30pm-8:00pm

Flowers Aren’t Enough by Naomi Ackermann

"Flowers Aren't Enough" is a monologue that tells the story of Michal, a young woman from an upper-middle-class family who finds herself in an abusive relationship. Michal describes how her partner gradually narrows her world, isolating her from her surroundings. We see her denial, her guilt and how social conditioning intensifies her shame and despair. We witness Michal sinking into darkness and then watch how she takes charge of her life, and rediscovers herself. See a clip of this performance here. Tickets $20 to non-conference participants/$10 conference participants. Purchase tickets here.

Opening Remarks: Ms. Joye E. Frost, Acting Director, Office for Victims of Crime

8:15am-10:00am: Child Custody and Domestic Violence

From Disgruntled Litigants to the Canaries of the Custody Court System: Protective Mothers Were Right—They Are Being Mistreated by the Courts

The new book, DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, ABUSE and CHILD CUSTODY establishes that the routine use of outdated and discredited practices has resulted in thousands of children being sent to live with abusers.  The research is now readily available to challenge and prevent the common mistakes that so often harm children.  The success of the abuser tactic seeking custody to maintain control over their victims and failure of the courts to recognize this tactic undermine the work of our movement and have led to an increase in domestic violence homicides after many years of declines.  Mo Therese Hannah will discuss the research available to help protective mothers.  Judge Mike Brigner will explain how judges are getting it wrong so often.  Garland Waller exposes the failure of the media to report this scandal.  You will want to stay until the end because Barry Goldstein will explain how to use this information in your home communities as we use the research in the book to reform the broken custody court system, prevent the unfair attacks on protective mothers and make sure no child has to cry herself to sleep because a court separated her from her safe, courageous, protective mother.

The Survivors Speak Out is structured to create a safe and welcoming environment to survivors of violence wishing to share their experiences. This forum is open to all survivors of violence and anyone wishing to show support, as well as to gain more insight to what survivors experience in their recovery from violent relationships.

The Speak Out is sponsored by the NCADV Battered/Formerly Battered Women’s Caucus. The Speak Out will be guided by a facilitator, and anyone who considers themselves a survivor of violence may participate. Please keep in mind that we ask that those who speak to please be respectful of the length of time they speak so that everyone has an equal opportunity. Please also keep in mind that this session is not open to questions and comments from the audience and is structured so that those not speaking listen respectfully to those that do. This session oftentimes brings up strong emotional reactions to the stories being told, so please use self-care and be aware of the intensity generated by this gathering. An advocate will be available for anyone who needs support during or after the Speak Out.
